About Us

History of the charity

Alongside a trustee board of seven, Sam Schoolar founded Shine a Light Support Service in September 2016, and achieved registered status in January 2017.

Sam, a childhood cancer survivor, is passionate about supporting other families affected by childhood cancer.

“My motivation for beginning Shine a Light is a life-long journey with Childhood Cancer which started when I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at the age of 10. The treatment I received lasted for two and a half years, the journey is still going. I have strived my whole life to help other families who face this journey, I have volunteered with children’s cancer charities from the age of 16, and have been part of many events aimed at raising awareness, funding for research, paving a better future for children diagnosed with childhood cancer and making life better for those affected now.”

Sam Schoolar

Sam Schoolar is the chair of Shine A Light Support Service. Sam says “I am passionate about working with Shine A Light to provide support and community to our families. Having had cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at the age of 10, I understand some of what families experience and also where there are gaps in support and services.

I have given much of my adult life to volunteering and working with Children’s Cancer Charities and so have a varied and wealthy experience in this field as well as my personal experiences. I have also worked in customer service roles as well as being a medical secretary in the NHS for a number of years.”

Alex Smith

Alex has been a Qualified Accountant for a number of years, mainly working in the Motor Trade and Publishing industries.

Alex is particularly happy to be involved with SAL as he lost a cousin to cancer at a young age, and feels that SAL can provide children and their families with the help and support they need at a difficult time.

Marie is an experienced Business Advisor, marketing consultant and management trainer, Marie said “I feel that I have lots of skills that will help Shine a Light to achieve its objectives and I hope that by contributing time and effort to help the charity that it will thrive and be able to achieve great things to benefit families who need the services.

She likes the variety and the chance to meet new people and learn new things as well as exercise her skills such as in recruitment and selection. She is married with a 15 year old daughter.

Marie says “We need to raise awareness and find people to help us in this great cause”
